Writer's picture: Sarah KaySarah Kay

Curious about what you can do in the garden this month? Here are my top 5 January tasks to get your garden ready for the upcoming growing season.

  1. Winter prune Wisteria

Prune wispy growths on your Wisteria to 2/3 buds cutting just above a bud.

  1. Prune climbing roses

Start by removing any dead, diseased, or damaged stems. Then, prune any flowered side shoots back by two-thirds and cut old stems down to the base if the plant is overcrowded.

  1. Check Hellebore foliage

Inspect Hellebore leaves and eliminate any foliage affected by black spot to maintain the plant's health.

  1. Plant for Winter fragrance

Sarcococca confusa is an excellent evergreen shrub that produces highly fragrant white flowers in the winter, followed by black berries. It thrives in shady areas with moist, fertile soil.

  1. Leave a drink for the birds

Keep your bird baths filled to provide our feathered friends with a drink during the colder months.
