I'm always looking for opportunities to add plants to a garden so when the project came up to design the planting for a bike store roof I jumped at the chance.
The bike store, build last year from Corten steel has integral planters and drainage with a square meterage of approx 5m2. My client wanted to soften the hard lines of the bike box, bring some colour and textrure into the garden, improve the privacy from the neighbours and have something beautiful to look out when sitting out in the garden.
My design seeks to bring graceful movement and subtle screening into the space with tall Miscanthus grasses and Verbena bonariensis in the back planters, complemented by Allium 'Purple Sensation'.
Pinus strobus 'Green Curls' and Skimmia japonic 'Fragrans' provide evergreen texture and rounded form to the planting design, softened by Sanguisorba 'Pink Tanna' and floaty Pennisetum grasses.
The front of the planters will be obscured by cascades of Rosmarius prostratus, Erigeron karvinskianus and the lime green billows of Hakonechloa macra.
The colour scheme for the bed are dusky pinks, purples, whites and many shades of green.
I look forward to planting this later this month.
