E12 New Orleans Style Courtyard

My client wanted to recreate the feeling of a New Orleans courtyard in his South West facing East London garden.

The existing garden has great privacy, despite being overlooked by a number of neighbours.  This is created by four existing trees which I felt were essential to retain.  This created the issue of how to integrate these trees into a New Orleans style garden with a significant amount of hard landscaping and tropical style planting.

Red brick, herringbone laid clay pavers and black metal and wood features were selected to recreate the New Orleans style with raised beds, wrought iron balconies and stone planters all featuring strongly.

Raised beds and a Wisteria adorned black metal veranda frame the view from the 'Crittal style' doors and add extra perching opportunities in the garden.

A solid black pergola makes the most of a disused side return offering a seating spot in the shade with reclaimed wrought iron gate trellis providing interesting views from the kitchen windows.

Sandstone stepping stones and gravel lighten the dark side return and provide a contract with the red brick and pavers.

An additional bench in the sun have the view of the an Ironstone planter filled with Agapanthus and trailing Muhlenbeckia

Planting is tropical style, with two large Tree Ferns in the raised beds and features fragrant climbers on all vertical surfaces and over the veranda and pergola.
